Stillman Inn Galena

January 1, 2017

We wanted to visit a B&B in Galena due to an opening in the schedule. This was #3 on yelp at the time. 6 of the 8 rooms in the 1850 brick home were sold out. They renovated the attic into the 8th room. It didn’t look historic but it has a large jacuzzi that we liked.

The breakfast was the entertaining part of the visit. Dave adds a flair to introducing people and serving breakfast. We have yogurt, turkey bacon, sausage, banana bread, and eggs with ham and cheese.

We enjoyed the food, jacuzzi, old house, Dave and Bernadine. Galena.

We ate at the Galena Brewery which offer six flights of beer. A great choice. Parking is tough in Galena so there are paid lots of $5-10. You could walk the 3/4 mile to the downtown on nice day, but it is uphill on the way back.

Need Improvement. Noise  from the US 20 trucks. Non working Fireplace. Cracked glass. Toilet close to wall. Memory foam mattress. A little cold at night.

5 cottages and 3 guest bedrooms all sold out months in advance for the Christmas Holidays. No TV in the rooms is refreshing.

Tony and crew has quite the elaborate decorations. This is there 26 year in business.

We had a divine seven course meal at 7pm of beef in wine sauce, risotto,  berry sorbet (needs seeds strained out), tomato bisque, garden salad w 10+ ingredients, a dessert parfait.

Breakfast  was fruit and grain parfait with a pumpkin crepe and chicken and kale.

We didn’t know how to control the heat so it got hot in the night. Turning off the gas fireplace fixed that.

We could have used a small table for the toiletries.

Breakfast was French Toast and three strips of Bacon. Yogurt w berries and granola. Excellent.

The jacuzzi was perfect for two. The rain head shower was great.

The pillows were soft though I would have like two smaller ones vs two long pillows for each pillow. The English bed was sturdy.

We went to Naperville ribfest which was 2.3 miles away.

Hegeler Carus Mansion – LaSalle Mansion

December 29, 2014

Quite the gem in LaSalle. Tours are only $10. It is a giant mansion and the tours are an hour long. The guide was excellent. The building is under renovation so the 150 year building is missing several things from the photos below. No photos are allowed.

The inn is a modern B&B that is very clean. We stayed in the Merrimac room which is decorated in a lighthouse theme. The main pillows are super comfortable.

The surprise was the size of the hot tub whirlpool. It fits two and is great with bubble baths.

Breakfast is continental or cooked $35 extra. WE opted for the cooked. We had Fruit plate, Cream cheese w smoked fish, Smoked sausage, French bread toast, Mini éclair, orange muskat wine. Most excellent. It is awkward with others using the continental options.

A chocolate bar! Rooms spacious clean. Jim took the time to explain the history of house. Lovely bronze statues there. Complimentary brandy at night. And chocolate. Room we had was a comfortable whirlpool. The cooked breakfast was French bread toast. Small sausage. Dace fish and cream cheese was excellent. Chocolate bar had ginger chocolate, almond, cranberry chocolate. We went to fast eddies for dinner. Fun!

The whirlpool seats two comfortably. It was so relaxing.

The shower could use more water pressure, but it works well for a water saver.

A very reason $102 for a night matches easily with local hotels. sherry keeps the place spotless with her cat Boogieboy. The cat never goes upstairs where the guest rooms are.

This is the room that we stayed in. The bed is firm and we slept solid eight hours

The living room was in a Christmas decor.

The bathroom is a shower only. There is no counter to spread all the toiletries so couple trips is necessary.

Soda pop was complimentary.

Breakdast was a fruit bowl of very fresh fruit. The cranberry scones with walnuts are exceptional. The entree was a french toast with apples and and side of sausage.

The house has more Dickens Christmas town scenes than a museum. It is a must see.

Plenty of room in the Jessica room.

The stay started with a 530pm wine time, Four wines, three cheese to choose from.

Susan made us reservations at an Italian place called Fried Green Tomatoes.

It was a good restaurant and much better than the 2.5 yelp rating.

The breakfast was fresh fruit in yogurt.

Marionberry turnovers.

Sausage.

Scrambled Eggs.

Cinnamon Apple Pancakes.

They have an extensive DVD collection so it is a recommended option.

Wireless was not working at the time off our visit.

The place is very clean.

Susan and Bob purchased this B&B in the Spring 2012 and maintain the superior rating of the prior owners.

Main street is two blocks away so you can walk or drive.

Pinehill Inn, Oregon IL

May 28, 2012

A hidden gem in the midst of the Northern Illinois Country. A house full of history.

We enjoyed the history that is in the three ring binder plus Ken taking us rime to show the history of the house. Wouldn’t it be lovely to see all the seven fireplaces in a book. The mantles change with holidays.

The screened in porch is must just to relax and have a beer. It is a rare treat in B&B’s so we had a nightcap and breakfast in there.

Chris makes the breakfast, fruit, bacon and French Toast. It might be pancakes or Quiche on other days. Simple but good.

Ken recommended the LaVigne Restaurant just south of Oregon. He has plenty of Oregon maps so it was easy to find. Italian fare as good as in any in Chicago.

The Blackhawk statue is must see. The view is tremendous. Go see it!

The Cottage room was our room. It was once a servant quarter. Step down in the hallway. There is a step up to the bathroom which

can cause a fall at night so turn lights on first.  The Jacuzzi is made for one but may fit two.

The wireless intenet is free.  Cable TV is provided.

Copperstone Inn, Rockton IL

February 14, 2010

Tucked in northern IL is a luxury Bed and Breakfast. The Copperstone Inn is a 1858 house with additions to complement the original design. The breakfast was great baked apple, blueberry french toast, scrambled eggs, sausage links, and heavenly hashed potatoes.

We stayed in the Farmer suite with a gas fireplace and trimmed in antique barnwood. The jacuzzi seats two comfortably. we found a bottle of champagne, cookie heart, and chocolates awaiting us on Valentine’s Day. The dual head shower is nice and has dual temperature. Although we didn’t go snow shoeing, it was a nice option to have.

The check in was smooth via email and the owners give a tour of the place and all the security features. We recommend GPS for the directions as it might be hard to find in the dark using a map.
